- Friedrich Nietzsche on Sils Maria

Friedrich Nietzsche
1844 - 1900

Friedrich Nietzsche first visited Sils Maria in 1881 and returned almost every summer until 1888. He spent a total of seven summers in this idyllic mountain village in the Swiss Upper Engadine, appreciating the unique landscape and the serene seclusion of Sils, which he declared his second home.

In Sils Maria, Nietzsche found the perfect environment for writing and contemplation. It was here that much of his significant work “Thus Spoke Zarathustra” was created.

Nietzsche loved taking long walks through the forests and along the shores of Lake Sils. His time in Sils Maria was marked by intense philosophical work and inner reflection. He described the area as “6000 feet beyond man and time,” feeling deeply connected to the tranquil and powerful nature.

To this day, Sils Maria attracts numerous visitors who are drawn by the inspirational power of this special place and Nietzsche’s legacy.

Hermann Hesse
1877 - 1962

In Sils, Hesse wrote some of his important works, including parts of "The Glass Bead Game", which is considered one of his major works. The nature and isolation in Sils enabled Hesse to engage in deep self-reflection, which is reflected in his diaries and letters from this time, in which he often processed his thoughts and feelings.

Thomas Mann
1875 - 1955

Thomas Mann visited Sils frequently, especially during the 1920s, to escape the political and social turbulence in Germany.

Rainer Maria Rilke
1875 - 1926

During his stays in Sils, Rilke worked intensively on his “Duino Elegies”, one of his most important works, and found in the lonely mountain landscape the necessary peace and inspiration for his profound poetry.

Marcel Proust
1871 - 1922

Marcel Proust was one of the first prominent guests of Sils Maria.

While walking along Lake Sils, he was so moved by the beauty of the surroundings that he was brought to tears.
