Golden larches by Lake Sils, the first snow-capped peaks behind
Autumn in the Engadine

The golden weeks

Around Sils, the season of colour has begun. Along the shore of Lake Sils and on the slopes above Val Fex, the larches turn a little more golden every day. Around mid-October the gold is at its strongest. Chesa Pool is open until 25 October, and rooms are still available for these weeks.

These days the sun rises over the ridge by the house at twenty past nine and sets behind the mountains shortly before six.

Stubete am See

For the sixth time, Sils becomes the meeting place of new Swiss folk music for three days: music rooted in tradition and entirely of today. Fourteen ensembles play twenty-two concerts in eight venues: hotels, the Open Church, for the first time the Catholic church, the Champsegl school and the Konzertplatz Fex.

The festival opens here in our valley. On Friday 16 October at 2.30 pm, Eiger, Mönch & UrSchwyz play on the Konzertplatz Fex, free of charge. On Sunday at 11.15 am, the Kristina Brunner Ensemble closes the festival at the Champsegl school with «Fahre», written especially for the Stubete, with the Engadine narrator Lorenzo Polin.

The way up

Above Sils, the paths climb through the larch forest and over open slopes until the lake lies far below. With every metre it grows quieter. At some point all you hear is your own step and the wind in the dry grass.

«Only thoughts reached by walking have value», wrote Nietzsche, who spent hours on foot almost every day of his summers in Sils. One often comes back from such walks quieter than one set out.

Maps and suggestions for every level of fitness are waiting for you at reception.

Through the golden Engadine

On an e-bike you glide almost silently along the lakeshore, through larch woods where the light falls golden on the path, past old hamlets. The climbs become easy, the distances small, the landscape stays vast.

In a single afternoon, Val Fex, Lake Sils and the road towards Maloja lie behind you. What remains is the scent of the forest, the sound of the water and this light that only October brings.
